To announce his farewell tour, Elton John released the landmark VR short film “Farewell Yellow Brick Road”. Working for Spinifex Group, imageflux lent technical and creative services to this monumental endeavor.

Owner Aaron Kaminar assumed the role of VR Technical Director, overseeing a stereoscopic pipeline that merged live action VR footage with CG assets. Additionally imageflux handled all VR stereoscopic stitching, and provided design and creative services to key scenes within the experience.

The end result is a fantastical VR journey through the rich musical history of Elton John. From his 1970 Troubadour show, to his 1975 concert at Dodger’s Stadium and beyond, the film evokes a true sense of nostalgia for those longing to see him on stage one last time.

A few things that make this work historically significant in the world of digital media:

  • Nascent stereoscopic VR cameras were employed to capture live action footage
  • Early use of Redshift GPU render engine
  • Early adoption of Nuke and After Effects stereoscopic VR compositing
  • One of the first videos to be hosted as 360 content on YouTube (Google was a project partner)
